Summer Trips + packing tips

2

*This post is sponsored by Target, however all the opinions and details shared are my own*

Summer is just around the corner and I couldn’t be more ready to dive in to the warmth and fun of it all. This summer will be a busy one for me as I dive into some intensive courses for Web Dev, but on the days I can get away, I look forward to going swimming.

Typically, packing for a good getaway trip is just short of chaotic (all the things must go!). This year, I would like to keep it simple. Easy, breezy and carefree packing is my goal.

MeronaTote_Afroniquely-You

Lucky for me, I was able to snag some items from Target that really will help me accomplish this. Where exactly we’ll be heading we’re not so certain yet, but thus far I’ve packed items I know can take me from brunch to beach with no problems.

OliveGreenSkirt-YellowTop_Afroniquely-You

I picked up this awesome Merona Tote bag, a catch-all perfect for quick on-the-go trips to anywhere. This tote will be my weekend getaway bag in an effort to, again, keep things light and carefree. I also got a Merona straw hat with black bow trim and I love it! It’s large and floppy and perfect for hiding the sunrays on those super hot days. I love a good green anything (cup, skirt, shirt, book, just love it!), so I snagged this gorgeous olive green pleated flowy skirt by and I’m obsessed! It’s so versatile. I can wear the skirt with this denim Merona top, and also with this yellow chiffon top I’ve had for ages.

MeronaTote-DenimDress_AfroniquelyYou

MeronaDress_Afroniquely-You

I also got this black off-the-shoulder beach dress, which doubles as a swimsuit cover up, so I’d be able to go from chic to swim with no problems. Of course, I will also need skincare essentials, and I am planning on packing the typical stuff: lip balms, lip glosses, lotions, hand sanitizers, soaps, and moisturizers like this Neutrogena Oil Free SPF moisturizer I picked up. I may or may not decide to wear makeup (and I know you guys know I’m not a huge makeup fan), but I ventured to get this Laneige BB Cushion with SPF 50, which seems like an awesome way to touch up for my picture-perfect moments.

Here are a few of my own packing tips:

  • Try to pack at least a few days before your trip date
  • Pack everything you think you may need (if you told yourself you’d only take one bag, pack everything you think you’ll need into this bag)
  • Revisit the packed bag either the day before the trip or day of the trip, eliminate any items you really think you’ll no longer need, or that doesn’t need to make it to the trip
  • Invest in good travel bags and those small TSA approved travel sized bottles
  • Make sure you pack enough undergarments, and also essentials (sanitary napkins, etc just in-case)
  • Take a travel pillow and a good travel blanket! If you’re anything like me, a good nap is only made better with a blanket and soft pillow
  • Have loose change at the ready for snacks, also be sure to pack snacks and handy food items for your trip. Especially if your diet is very particular, ensure you have things ready and available that you could eat.
  • If you’re going to take hats and items that could risk getting crushed in transit, try stuffing them with other soft items like your socks and underwear to help them retain their shape.
  • Have your travel documents ready at all times!! Most of my trips were on airplane or on Amtrak and I can assure you, you’ll be needing to present your documents often as part of the routine check ups, so be sure to keep them on you and in a safe place.

Ok loves, that wraps up my top few tips for travel packing and just tips to get by when out and about.

Share with me, how do you pack for your weekend getaways or for a long trip?

Well, I’ll keep you all posted on where I decide to venture to for my quick getaway. Until then, do share with me your favorite travel destinations and any awesome tips you have for making them fun.

Weekend Thoughts

0

Don’t you love when the weather decides to warm up some? I can’t wait for the spring to finally kick in here in NYC. It’s still cold here (like winter seriously doesn’t want to go), and I am so ready to just lose this jacket business.

Since the weekend is here, I’ve got lots to do, namely: church, cleaning, finishing up projects and prepping for the week ahead. Today, in an effort to make something other than rice as the grain for my meal, I decided to try Quinoa. Have you tried that before? Tell me below, and if you have a yummy recipe, totes share it with me! *foodies unite!* I haven’t ever made quinoa myself before, I’ve eaten and enjoyed it prior, but today was the first time I jumped in and decided to give it a go myself. Definitely easy to do, and also don’t underestimate the power of the rise factor. Like, yeah.. this thing swells up so much! LOL. I attempted to make a small batch, well, let’s just say this batch became more like a good regular pot full of rice (not complaining though).

What’s funnier is, today I also came across this awesome Quinoa breakfast recipe video, and I definitely look forward to trying it next. My hubby is vegan, and I’m well, getting there lol. His diet completely changed and I’m still fighting the struggle (aka giving up my fave chicken – it’s the taste man), but I’ll eventually get there.

I also wanted to share, going forward I’ll be making some changes around here. I am sure I already mentioned Afroniquely You will evolve into the new Textured Girl Blogazine, and I seriously look forward to it. It will allow this space to be so much than just mostly hair. I’m also working more on my design site and totally knocked out recently a Sales Page for a coaching program and a full fledged Custom Coach Site! Yay me! Next up, launch a few blog designs I’ve been working on and also a full out refresher of my own FMD studio website.

What’s up for this weekend with you? Let’s chat below.

Fearless Endeavours + Target Swim Collection

3

THIS POST IS SPONSORED BY TARGET, BUT ALL OPINIONS ARE COMPLETELY MY OWN AS ALWAYS!
Spring is finally getting closer, and I seriously cannot wait till we can usher in some truly warm weather (yeah winter, I’m over you!) so I can do all the beach activities. Today I wanted to touch on stepping out of the limited mindset we sometimes put ourselves into. Ever felt like you’ve fallen into a rut that you placed yourself in, and just can’t get out? Yeah, it’s happened to us all. Recently, I wanted to go run a few errands, and seeing that laundry wasn’t done yet, I needed a top to just grab, wear and go. It then dawned on me, why not use my super cute swimsuit as a top? As part of Target’s #NOFOMO initiative, they wanted to challenge us as women to go forth, be bold and do things that push us into fearless winnings.
To be honest, at first I felt a bit odd; who wears a swimsuit as a top? But then I thought about the crop top craze, and how those tops are similar to bras and thought: what’s the difference? It’s all in how tactfully you wear the item.

SWeekes-FearlessEndeavors-2

Truth is, if I didn’t say this was a swimsuit, you probably wouldn’t even have known. And from that I have a few wonderful little lessons. I wanted to remind you: step out and be bold in pursuing your dreams. Just because others aren’t able to see the overall goals and visions you have, it doesn’t mean you need to dampen your dreams. Keep at them! Also, it’s okay to use things in as many ways possible so long as they can do that job and do it well.
I challenge you to step out there and be fearless. Are you a singer? How about doing a video of you singing in your swimsuit? Try something you’d otherwise be afraid to do; embrace the fear! You’ll feel even more accomplished when you look back at the fear you overcame.

SWeekes-TargetSwim2c

Step out of your limitations and do fearless things to just prove to yourself you don’t need to constantly miss out on your dreams. Embrace your body the way it is, flaws and all, and really enjoy what life has to offer. Recently I posted about some of the swimsuits I picked up at Target, and they had some awesome selections. Feel free to go check out Target today, and start living with a #NOFOMO (no fear of missing out) attitude. Target is currently having a buy one, get one 50% off swimwear sale AND you save 20% when you spend $75 on clothes, shoes, & accessories (until 2/27/18)! Target also offers free shipping and returns, which allows you to shop online, try your purchases at home, and send back whatever doesn’t work. After searching through literally hundreds of mix and match two-pieces, one-pieces, and coordinated sets, here are some selections I just loved:

Go forth and embrace your body, swimsuits and this summer search Instagram for the hashtags, #TargetStyle and #NOFOMO and be inspired.

Body Confident with Target Style

0

This post is sponsored by Target.

Growing up, I was always body conscious. That sentiment may surprise a lot of people, simply because they see me as this tall, slim, young lady with a model’s body. Except growing up being tall and slim was absolutely the most annoying thing, when everyone else around is shorter and doesn’t look “like a stick”. For years, I had this thing where I hated to really see my body. I didn’t mind hiding behind loads of layers, but when it came to swimming I always wanted to wear something that wouldn’t weigh me down in the water. I’m a true water baby. I’ve always been one—I’ve loved swimming since the very moment I was taught to do it.

Heading to the pool or the beach as a kid wasn’t a big dealheck I’d grab my one-piece and jump right in. As I got older, the body-conscious thoughts kicked in, and suddenly I didn’t feel that wonderful wearing swimsuits at all. Part of that can truly ruin the way you continue to view yourself if the thoughts fester long enough. I’m so happy Target Style has created a new campaign geared around allowing women to stand proud and be confident in their own skin!

No more FOMO!! I’ve never been too keen on a bikini. I’m a huge fan of one-pieces, but they must absolutely look good! Target has such a stellar selection—like, seriously! I got myself this beyond awesome leopard-print swimsuit (if you know me, you know I LOVE leopard printso I snagged this without batting an eyelash) and the little cutouts on the sides are too cute. It was important to me that whatever I wear when swim season comes around shortly this year, I’ll feel beautiful and confident, and that it is something I love!

I like to wear my suits with either swim skirts or swim trunks (call me a modest swimmer). I also got myself this beautiful black-and-white print swimsuit with neon/lime green highlights (another love, because green is my fave color!). I really didn’t think this one would be as stunning as it turned out to be, and it’s really comfortable as well.

Details

Lastly, I did get a bandeau-style top to pair up with a swim skirt. I really love the funky style of this top. My only downfall was, even though I followed the size chart and got the recommended size per my chest measurement, what I have here is a bit too big for me. (I’m hoping to get my correct size because I really love the color combo on this piece.) I also got this white mesh cover-up that’s great for strolling the beach until I’m ready to actually swim.

Laced
Love this lace cover up, so comfy!

Have you tried any of Target’s latest swimsuits?

Be sure to check out the #NOFOMO tag over on Instagram and check out Target Style to get yourself a body-confident swimsuit this year.

Plan to Thrive!

2

As we approach 2016, I reflect on this year that passed by. What did I fail in? What did I accomplish? What can I move forward into the new year with? One thing I know is, I’d love to enter 2016 refreshed and with a real plan. No more letting fears hold me back. I’ve been a long time lover of planners and getting organized (though, if I’m totally honest, sometimes my life is super chaotic and my surroundings can often show some clutter) – but yet I obsess with looking at chic, neat and well put together spaces, or binge watching planner videos on youtube (don’t judge me!).

Today I wanted to share a beautiful planner I came across. A bunch of you probably already know the Thrive Planner by Kimika Hudson, but if you don’t fret not, I’ll dish the deets.

31 Days of Betterment

15
It’s October! Where in the world is time rushing to? I’ve stumbled across The Nesters Write for 31 Days challenge before, and never participated. This year I decided to join in. I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to focus on, because to be honest I’ve got a lot going on that I’d love to improve. For my challenge I decided to call it Betterment. What am I improving or what needs fixing? Well I’d love to get my TWA back on track and also adjust my diet to be healthier and get more exercise in. As well, there are goals I’ve had that I needed time to focus on. Overall betterment is what I am after, and I think a nifty journaling of my 31 days would be helpful.

31-Days-Betterment_Afroniquely-Youjpg

This post will act as the main index for all the posts that will fall in the 31 Days of Betterment. While I may not post every single day here to the blog itself, I will keep an active journal and I do plan to post my notes when I create a post. So for example I may post tomorrow, and then post again on Tuesday/Wednesday (in-which that post would chronicle everything from Sat up until that point as far as my challenge/task for each day was concerned).

CHALLENGE GOALS

Hair Related:

  • more moisture
  • a plan for real winter care
  • regular deep treatments
  • figuring out a good gel for my TWA

Lifestyle

  • exercising more often (at-least 3x a week)
  • getting acne and scars under real control
  • improving my dieting (+ eliminate dairy as much as possible)
  • Bible Journal – it’s new to me, but I am going to start journaling my bible as I study it and such

Blogging & Biz

  • game plan for the blog – plan it out and do it!
  • create my dream biz plan
  • blog consistently!!
  • get blog contributors

Ok, I’m really looking forward to this month, and I’m sure I’ll be pushing a few of these goals/things to do way beyond just the 31 days, simply because they are things I’d love to continue to see happen in my life.

Are you doing any challenges?

Easy Does It with Dove Quench Absolute Creme Serum

24

**This post is sponsored by Target**

You know that song or saying “if at first you don’t succeed, pick yourself up and try again”? Well, let’s just say, if at first it doesn’t work, pick it up and try it again. When I first got my Target Beauty Box, I was pretty excited to see full sized products in the line up plus see some new things I haven’t tried before. In particular, I really loved the packaging right away of the Dove Advanced Hair Series Quench Absolute Creme Serum.

When I first tried it, I wasn’t really feeling it. Somehow my hair just felt odd. I tried it on a small section at first, and really I wasn’t impressed so I just said meh, won’t use it again. Well, I pulled it back out and decided to give it another few goes, and I am happy to say I was wrong. Turns out my hair quite enjoys it.

Target-Beauty-Box-Intro

Dove Advanced Hair Series Quench Absolute Creme Serum is fantastic for dry hair! Via the Target Beauty Box
Awesome hair serum, for thirsty curls

Hair Stats & Product Use

I have what’s called a TWA (teeny-weeny afro) and my hair is a lair for moisture, it will leech moisture and suck it all up every chance it gets (catch my drift?). The instructions on the label said that this product could be used on damp or dry hair, so I figured, since I recently washed my hair, and I did wear a hair scarf the other day, I’d replenish some moisture into the strands. A few pumps of the creme serum, massaged it into my tresses and voila! My hair’s feeling lovely and revitalized. Awesome!, especially considering I totally wrote this off after our first encounter.

Get it or Skip It?

In short, I think I’ll be giving this good use, especially for the days when my hair just needs a quick pick-me-up. The serum isn’t oily, in-fact, it’s like a greaseless-slick feel that it leaves on your fingers. It also adds some shine to dull hair. Overall, yep, I’m recommending getting this and giving it a try. You just might like it.

So tell me, have you tried this Dove Quench Creme Serum?

Cantu Beauty – The Unboxing

0

**This post is sponsored by Cantu**

I’ve been using the Cantu line now for quite a number of years. For myself I found their twisting gel to be awesome! And for my mom it seemed like the entire line was in her favor. Well I’m excited that I got to try their new line up, specifically formulated for the kinky hair girls. Today I am sharing my first impressions and overall thoughts on the products.

Cantu Beauty- Natural Hair Line

The Products

In the box I received the Cantu Sulfate Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo – Natural Collection, Cantu Sulfate Free Hydrating Cream Conditioner – Natural Collection, Cantu Leave-In Conditioning Cream – Core Collection, Cantu Coconut Curling Cream – Natural Collection and the Cantu Twist & Lock Gel – Natural Collection

The Impressions

I absolutely love the Twist & Lock Gel for finger coils and twists on my extremely short TWA. The product goes on smooth, and when it dries it has a hard crunch to it, but I found that once you scrunch the hair the hardness disappears.

For my wash day I gave the Shampoo + Conditioner a go, since my hair was dirty and had product build up from using another brand of gel prior. The Shampoo, while it smells phenomenal and really gets the gunk up and off your scalp, left my hair feeling way too stripped. I was disappointed about that. (I will say though, it acts as a great gentle soap for washing your delicates with). Thankfully the conditioner helped to replenish what the shampoo stole. Immediately as I put it on my hair, it started to feel soft and nice again. My curls weren’t popping, but my hair felt tremendously better than it did a few moments ago after rinsing the shampoo out. The conditioner also provides a little bit of slip, so that helps with detangling.

Both the leave-in conditioning cream and the coconut curling cream are awesome for imparting moisture. I recommend doing a thorough moisturize and seal method to get the full benefits. The leave-in is very creamy and it glides on the hair, and a little goes a long way. This particular product is one of my mom’s faves over the years. The coconut curling cream was new to me, but I really liked how it gave a nice soft hold. I plan to try it with the lock and twist gel in the future and see how that combination works out.

Overall I’d recommend trying the line of products. They all smell divine, they work well for the most part (as for the shampoo, if your hair strips like mine, opt for a pre-poo prior to shampooing and that should help combat the dryness).

Would you give the Cantu line a try?

The Giveaway!!

It’s simple really, because Cantu is doing an awesome thing to ensure women everywhere rep their own kind of beautiful and live their lives knowing they are not confined by their curls nor are they limited, I just want you to share with me below: what does #BYOBeautiful mean to you? Be Your Own Beautiful with Cantu! Target Beauty Box – The Unboxing

0

This post is sponsored by Target.

It’s officially here! My very first Target Beauty Box!! squeal I was super excited to get this in the mail, albeit, I forgot about the package coming – so pleasant surprise. I want to briefly show what came in the box and my first impressions thus far.

The Products

In the box I received the Curls Crème Brulee Whipped Curl Cream, Dove Advanced Hair Series Quench Absolute Creme Serum, SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Styling Lotion, Colgate Optic White Platinum Express White Toothpaste, Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner

Target-Beauty-Box-Unboxing

The Impressions

So far my most fave things in the box are the SheaMoisture styling lotion, and the Curls Crème Brulee. Both of them are creamier products and my hair tends to love that type of stuff. I gave the Colgate Optic White Platinum toothpaste some use and I’d say it’s pretty impressive. It cleans and it’s not too harsh on my sensitive gums (so thumbs up for that). The Aquaphor was probably the one product in the box that I had not really considered before. I decided to give it a try as a cuticle cream actually, because well, it says it’s for healing and my fingers/hands and I are on a repair journey to end nail-biting and messing with my cuticles. So there it is, I tried the ointment as a cuticle repairer and to my surprise, it works just fine as one   (yay for the out-the-box uses). As for the Jane Carter leave-in, I have used this particular one in the past and I enjoy it as a quick refresher during the week for old hair or hair that needs a quick sprucing up. I have yet to give the Dove Quench a try but I am very impressed with the way it’s packaged. The sleek design makes it look somewhat higher-end. Overall I am pretty happy with all the goodies included in the box, and for the price point that Target will be selling it, it’s a great way to trial new goodies for hair and skin without sacrificing a chunk of your cash.

Would you give the Target Beauty Box a try?

Capture the beauty in the world

2
Christina Greve Photography
Christina Greve Lifestyle photo

The other day I told myself I really need to pick my DSLR up again and reconnect with it. I haven’t really taken photos in a long time, but I have a true affinity for lifestyle+portraiture photography. My friend shared his 5OOPX page with me and I started to fawn over the lovely images I was reminded of clicking the heart button on by tons of photogs, and also this stunning photo:

Dream-Flowers-Girl

Browsing through and just falling in love with more pics via Pinterest and across the web made me really tell myself that it’s time, time to truly learn my camera, and truly learn the art of photography. I’ve been eyeing Christina Greve Lifestyle Photo Class for quite a while now, because her images are all so lovely! And as faith would have it, she decided to do a giveaway as well on her course!!! squeals** My dream is to be able to win a free seat in, or if not, then one day be able to buy my way in. Either way, her class seems like the perfect course for me. It is self paced, completely digital and really covers a lot of ground in natural lighting, manual photography and more importantly lifestyle and portraiture photography that I absolutely love!

Why Photography?

amanda-diaz-photography

Ever since I was little, I’ve loved beautiful imagery. Something about seeing flowers captured in a stunning way or seeing the sun-kissed skin of an amazing portrait shoot, or being able to create a fantasy through photography like Amanda Diaz does – I’ve just always been compelled to it. It’s been my dream to take stunning blog photos like Shirley B. Eniang does and to rock at feature photos on my hair blog, and my portfolio. Let’s face it, photography is way to speak to so many different things in our lives.

The Plan

Ultimately get into Christina’s course! Like yes please! But other than that, I want to master manual photography and natural light, and also learn to use lights. I have the very basic kit right now, a Canon T3i and it’s two kits lens, a 18-55mm and a 70-300mm.

Are you a photography lover too?

Overall, I can’t wait to plan out a photo challenge so I can push myself to learn the wonderful art of photography and praying and hoping I am also the winner of the awesome free seat into the lifestyle photo course (pray with me please!). I’ll be sure to do a post when I figure out my photo challenge and plan completely. I’m so ready to get over the bad photos hump (and in another challenge, also learn to take photos of myself more and not be camera shy and awkward). Till then, be afroniquely you!

Target Denim Hits Stores!

27
TARGET DENIM REVIEW
*This post is sponsored by Target*

Have you ever hunted for the perfect jeans, only to find something just doesn’t measure up? Well Target is on a mission to change all that. Target_Denim-AfroniquelyYou   First off, I have to say Target Denim has come a long long way! I got a few pairs of jeans to try and I was super excited. I will stress that it’s important, if you’re a tall girl like I am, be sure to shop their long lengths so everything really fits nicely. Unfortunately I got the regular cuts in most of the jeans, but I still remained creative with how I wore them (^.~)

Fit, Style & Personal Tastes

Size wise, the jeans fit pretty good. I am naturally anywhere from a size 4 or 5 depending on the maker of the jeans. I got the jeans in size 4 and while they hugged my hips fairly nicely, a few of them were pretty big on my waist. Of the four pairs I got, I really only could wear three, one of them I’ll most likely have to convert into capris or something for it to look right on me.       The Mossimo High Rise Flare Jeans   This pair of jeans was actually the only pair to fit me full length with no problems at all. The waist fit perfectly, and the length was perfect, too bad it’s the one style I actually don’t like much (bell-bottoms!). Other than my own biases against bell-bottoms, I have to say these were a great modern take on the style and the fit is super comfy.       Mossimo High Rise Jegging Jeans   This by far was my favorite. I love dark blue jeans that have a sort of bleached lines effect, so instantly this was my fave when I saw it. Imagine how sad I was though that the length was a bit short (only for a tall girl though, if you are under 5’8″ this 4/27″ length should be perfect!). This particular pair is very comfy to wear, easy to slide into and really can be dressed up or down making it super versatile. Oh one quirk I did have though, was this offers no front pockets, only back ones (took me some getting used to lol).       Mossimo Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans   My second fave pair of the bunch! Such an easy to wear comfortable fitting jeans. Again another one that was too short to really wear it as is, so I had to get creative and diy stitch and roll the edges up. I may convert this one into a skirt. I found the waist area to be a bit large for me even though the size is size 4.   I found myself wearing this one mostly. Maybe it was because it has front and back pockets, or maybe because it was the easiest to put on and go, or maybe its a bit of both.       Mossimo Mid-Rise Straight Jeans   As I mentioned earlier, this pair I couldn’t even work with as it is. Since it’s a straight leg, I can’t comfortably roll it up or turn it into something on the fly so I’ll let my creative juices flow and DIY it into capris or shorts or something eventually. Outside of the length being short on me, the fit was a bit snug. Maybe due to the material not being stretchy like the high rise and mid rise jegging and skinny jeans.

Expectations and More

To be quite honest, I really expected long perfect fitting jeans. What I got were jeans that fit in some places but not others. Overall for the three jeans I did get to really wear, I had to definitely wear a belt on two of them to compensate for the bigger waist area. Other than those minor issues, the leggings and skinny jeans were right up my style alley. Id recommend these jeans to anyone. While Im not huge on the flare jeans trend, I think Target may have convinced me to at least give them another shot before totally writing them off for infinity and beyond! All the jeans are comfortable to wear on a day-to-day basis. I even wore them to a VBS and got in on some action and they held up nicely (no ripping, no embarrassing moments).   In my opinion the styles are pretty trendy, from the dark rinse colors to the more acid vintage wash of the flare jeans, I’d say Target is heading in the right direction as far as trend is concerned. I loved that the jeans made me feel really comfortable in my own skin with each outfit. Usually I’d feel self-conscious in jeans, but these were so easy to wear it wasn’t too hard to just be free and be myself in them. In summary Id give the collection a 4 star rating out of 5, only on the premise that the waist area could be better and that length is so crucial!

Get Your Own!

Starting on July 26th you can try on your own pairs of Target denim in stores and also save $10 off your purchase! I highly suggest you go in, try them on, see the various styles for yourself and get yourself or a family member/friend a pair! Find your style @targetstyle Shop Target Denim

Being Woman

0
Being Woman - Our Monthly Cycles
*This post is sponsored by Violet iodine, but all opinions expressed in this post are entirely my own.*

Hey loves!

Hope you’re enjoying the new week we’re blessed to have. Today I’m adding something new to the lifestyle/beauty column, I’m talking about being woman and the joys and sometimes pains of that. Specifically I am talking about when Aunt Flo decides to visit and just some ways we can try to push past the suffering.

The Uneasy Start

We’ve all been there, that seriously un-easy first time of experiencing our menstrual cycles. If I am completely honest, I don’t really remember the first day it happened, but I do remember that I was not thrilled that it arrived. I was around 11/12 or so and I was pretty embarrassed that it came, lol.

After moving past the awkward fact that yes, this is normal and it will happen (granted my mom prepped me countless times – still doesn’t change the fact that I wanted no parts of it), I realized another reason to hate on Aunt Flo was that she causes some real pain and discomfort.

Symptoms

I don’t know about you, but every time Aunt Flo decides to show up I feel as though I am in my own personal World War 3 with myself. I am hitting walls to deflect pain, I’m all nauseous and extremely bathroom bound for fear that I may just die from excruciating pain, and of-course hugs hurt too, because let’s face it the girls get super tender.

  • Tender boobs
  • Nauseous
  • Excruciating Pains in abdomen
  • Severe pain in my joints
  • Irritability
  • Moodiness
  • Insomnia
  • Easily Flustered

Like seriously, Aunt Flo has me looking crazy each month lol!

Tell me below, what are your symptoms?

Some Solutions

So far nothing as really helped my situation completely. I do natural remedies mostly because for years I was a pain-killer-pill junkie and that did nothing for me, except I think to add to more problems in my body. Now I am frequent user of natural Ginger tea with some honey, I also like eating some bananas during that time of the month and recently I came across a new supplement called Violet Iodine.

Violet iodine is a molecular iodine supplement that, when taken daily, alleviates the most common symptoms of premenstrual breast discomfort, including swelling, tenderness, aches and heaviness and it promotes optimal breast health. Visit VioletDaily.com for more information. I’m pretty excited about the Violet iodine supplement and how it can help me feel a bit better during that time of the month and beyond. I’m over the boob pain!

What do you use?

Thank you Violet iodine and Blogger Babes for this wonderful opportunity. Let me know what you think by tagging #HugsShouldntHurt on Facebook and Twitter.

A Space to Dream – Parachute Home

0

Space-To-Dream_By_Afroniquely-You-Blog

Sometimes we need a safe retreat, a place to escape reality, a place to create, to be, to dream, to do, to think. Often times for me that’s my bedroom. It’s my little safe haven. Sadly though, it is no where as luxe as the gorg bedrooms above, but I love it still. Some reasons I love my bedroom would include when my bedding is ultra comfortable and is eco-friendly, like this awesome Parachute Home comforter (swoon and wishlisted!), when my room is warm and bright with sunlight, when it’s scented beautifully with warm vanilla candles or smells of the ocean breeze, when it’s clutter free (err, sadly this is one to tackle). How about you? What makes your bedroom that space to dream?

5 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress

0

Ahhh! Sometimes that’s just how you feel, like screaming, like just kicking everything because you’re stressed. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. Today I want to share my top five ways of totally kicking stress to the curb!

1Read a book

I love to read, and whether it’s reading comedy, something romantic, something that uplifts – reading always helps to relax me.

2Listen to music

This is one of the easiest ways to destress for me. If I am sad or feeling antsy, I just listen to soothing relaxing music and it always helps me calm down. I highly recommend you try out music when you’re on the go.

3Chew on RESCUE Pastilles

These are awesome!! 100% Natural/Homeopathic and chewable, they are safe for the entire family. The RESCUE Pastilles were developed by a doctor and ensures that their isn’t any habit-forming or side effects. I really like these because it’s almost like chewing gummy candy. They come in this carry-around tin can and they can be found in a variety of stores such as CVS, Walgreens, Whole Foods, Sprouts and just about anywhere that you find your natural products. If you want to give it a try and save some money while you’re at it, check out the Pastilles and the other RESCUE products here.  I would highly recommend these to the person who’s on the go, or need something quick, safe and fast acting that’s chewable. RESCUE also comes in a mouth spray, and some other forms, so definitely check out the available selection. They also come in yummy lemon flavors too and an extensive range of products (click the image below to see full range). I have the Blackcurrant flavor and it’s delish!

RESCUE-Range

4Stretch & Nap

Nothing beats easy peasy stretches to just relax your body. I enjoy doing quick stretches and also taking a much needed nap! Kids don’t know how easy they have it (seeing they get allotted nap times – I wish we adults still had those).

5Do Something Creative

One of my fav ways destress is to find something creative to do. Since I am a Visual Designer, I love to doodle, or craft up something digitally or even just go crochet. Basically, finding something that I know I enjoy helps relieve the tension.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

So tell me, how do you destress and unwind? What are your favorite ways to do so?

Head and Shoulders Moisture Care Collection Review

0
Head and Shoulders Moisture Care Collection

Head and Shoulders Moisture Care

This post is sponsored by P&G

Head and Shoulders Moisture Care Collection Pre-Review

Winter time tends to be a disaster on my hair because, for whatever reason, being anemic and then having issues retaining moisture to begin with, it becomes even more of a challenge in the colder months. I was sent these products to review, and while I don’t have dandruff, I do have hair that’s chronically dry in these colder months and as a result my scalp sometimes just feels tight. I opted to try these to see how my hair and hubby’s hair would react using them.

The Products

Included in the collection are the 2 in 1 moisture care shampoo+conditioner, the co-wash moisture care conditioner and the moisture care scalp soother.

The Claims

The collection is advertised as being one that would provide moisture to the hair and scalp immediately and over time help to effectively eliminate dandruff and leave you flake-free. It’s also enriched with ingredients such as Vitamin E rich almond oil, coconut essence and zinc pyrithione (ZPT) which is the active dandruff fighter.
Thoughts & Results

Please note: I did a patch test on myself (since my hair was still in a protective style) and I did a full out wash and test session as well on my husband’s hair. Initially I figured these would smell medicated, but was actually surprised that they had a clean scent to them (if you’ve used any form of dandruff or specialized shampoos in the past, you know that weird smell). Head & Shoulders did a great job of making these products all smell clean and refreshing (a slight hint of the zinc is there, but it is nowhere near overbearing).

The Shampoo has this creamy consistency, and for my really highly textured afro hair, it worked out well. I was actually able to detangle slightly with the shampoo in my hair.

As for the Co-Wash, I really enjoyed this product. It was creamy, it felt smooth on contact and also left my hair feeling softer. I was able to also detangle with ease while this product was on my hair – so that’s awesome! I also used this on my husband’s hair, and it felt really soft on his hair, the little curls just started to pop on contact.

The Scalp Soother is said to cool the scalp and to improve its moisture balance. After I had washed my hair, I gently dried it (blotting) and then followed up with a few pumps of the Scalp Soother to my scalp. Instantly I could feel the cooling effects and overall, I’d say it’s nice.

I would have to continue to use these and see how well my hair reacts and I do plan to test it on a friend who suffers from mild dandruff/dry scalp. Overall, I think this collection is pretty great. It did deliver on the moisture and the scalp soother seems to be working well from what I can tell.

Closing Remarks

If you’re suffering from dandruff, or maybe like me, just really dry winter hair and a dry-tight scalp as a result, I suggest giving this collection a try. For me, I can use these products once (or a max of twice) per week, and I am expecting great results. Head and Shoulders scientists explored the unique needs and characteristics of African American hair and found a drastic need for moisture and protection. Head & Shoulders NEW Moisture Care collection, with Vitamin E rich almond oil and coconut essence, provides moisture for scalp and hair immediately and also over time, eliminating dandruff and leaving you 100% flake-free. Lofty Desires Bedroom

Happy Fab Friday lovely!! Hope today proves to be fabulous and a boost for the upcoming weekend. I wanted to share this fab bedroom decor I found. If you’re like me, I swoon often at pretty decor. The luxuries of a comfortable bedroom always prove to be one of the best investments we could have ever made. I absolutely love this bed and the subtle glam of the room.

2015: The Year to Conquer and Overcome + I’m Back to blogging!

3

Wow! It’s already 15 days into the new year!!! Where is time flying to? Happy 2015 lovelies! It’s crazy to think 2014 was just here, and now we’re already well into this brand new year. So I’m back to blogging (yipee!), but I’ve made a resolve in myself to do it my way this go around. Often times I felt like an inadequate blogger, or even a failure, but in this new year and going forward, nothing can place emotional/mental/physical baggage on me unless I allow it. This is the year for me to overcome fear, and to not only conquer goals, but to inspire others to do the same!

Conquering Goals

For this year I have a lot of things planned. But first I have to tell you. When I celebrated my birthday Dec 31 and got home like 5:30am Jan 1 because hubby and a few friends and I went to a gospel concert all the way out in Bronx/Harlem area, I was too pooped to even post anything. Then it happened, I felt this surge of fear “I already failed!” “It’s a brand new year and I’m off to a bad start” is all I could tell myself. But who determines what works for me? Only God and myself can do that. So now that I’ve finally caught a handle on things, I’m sharing my first post, and I am excited!!!!!!

Happy2015-Minimalism-Afroniquely-You

Goal 1: Minimalism

I want to be more minimalist in the things I do, and what I allow into my space. Whether it’s what I watch, what I’m doing, where I’m going. My view of minimalism is to do what is needful and that will propel me to be better.

Happy2015-Consistency-Afroniquely-You

Goal 2: Blog Consistently

Organization and consistency is key in blogging. I know I mentioned it before but it’s really true. This year I’m looking forward to sticking to a schedule. I know I may not get to post 5 times a week, but if I can start small and set myself to post on at-least the same two days every week it’s a good start. I think for me Tuesdays and Fridays seem to be the days when I have a little freedom. So Tuesdays+Fridays expect postings here on Afroniquely You. I’ll also be keeping updated on my social media with daily posts for Instagram | Twitter | Facebook and making YouTube videos (aiming for vids at-least once per month)

Happy2015-Blogging-Afroniquely-You

Goal 3: Blog What I LOVE!

Seriously, for years I was afraid to introduce topics I love like: design and art, home decor, fashion and beauty etc, because I felt like what if people wouldn’t understand it? But guess what? This is my space, a space where I share what I really love. That includes hair and it’s maintenance but it definitely includes much more than that. In-fact the definition of being Afroniquely You involves the whole person, not just one aspect of what they chose to portray. I hope you all will enjoy seeing new posts in that area.

Happy2015-Visual-Design_Afroniquely-You

Goal 4: Share my Design Work more

Ok, so maybe you know, and maybe you don’t. I am a Visual Artisan working specifically in Graphic and Web Design, but over the years of my blogging I hardly ever shared my paintings, my digital art, my web designs and work I’ve done for people like my local church. Going forward, I will be sharing my artworks, and taking you all on the journey, including when I come up with a few series of greatness! Check out my portfolio site too, and I am also available for hire!

Happy2015-Collab-Celebrate-Afroniquely-You

Goal 5: Collaborate and Celebrate

I’ve been blogging since 2008, and I actually never did one of those blogging anniversary parties, no events of my own or any of that. This year I’d love to actually collaborate more with fellow bloggers, and brands and also where possible celebrate not just my blogging, but wonderful bloggers and folks on a whole in an event/meetup. I’m looking forward to having more guest bloggers, more hair features in addition to new features in other topics and overall and wonderful time here on Afroniquely You Blogazine.

I hope this little list of my goals to conquer this year help remind you to push forward and also that starting late according to the man, don’t mean you are a failure! Do things when it’s right for you!

I am so looking forward to really getting to back into the habit of blogging and I look forward to sharing my journey with you all and better- meeting you all across these interwebs. Come back Friday for another installment of awesome, till then ciao bella!

Alright, tell me below, what are some of your very own goals for 2015?
